Thomas Merton
The whole Christian life is a life in which the further a person progresses, the more he has to depend directly on God. The more we progress, the less we are self-sufficient. The more we progress, the poorer we get so that the man who has progressed most, is totally poor - he has to depend directly on God. He's got nothing left in himself.
Thomas Merton
Walter J. Chantry
Our Good Shepherd has become the model for under-shepherds. His great concern is the good of the sheep. A good shepherd gives himself to the sheep. A thief comes to get something form the flock - wool or mutton. Jesus our Lord made every personal claim subservient to the blessing of his flock; even to giving His life that they might live.
Walter J. Chantry
Thomas Adams
Grace comes into the soul, as the morning sun into the world; first a dawning; then a light; and at last the sun in his full and excellent brightness.
Thomas Adams
Mgr Luigi Giussani
J.C. Ryle
Surely that man must be in an unhealthy state of soul who can think of all that Jesus suffered, and yet cling to those sins for which that suffering was undergone. It was sin that wove the crown of thorns; it was sin that pierced our Lord’s hands and feet and side; it was sin that brought Him to Gethsemane and Calvary, to the cross and to the grave. Cold must our hearts be if we do not hate sin and labor to get rid of it.
J.C. Ryle
Robert Murray McCheyne
When old companions, old lusts, and sins crowd in upon you, and when you feel that you are ready to sink, what can save you, sinking sinner? This alone - I have a high priest in heaven, and he can support in the hour of affliction. This alone can give you peace - I have a high priest in heaven. When you are dying - when friends can do you no good - when sins rise up like specters around your bed - what can give you peace? This - "I have a high priest in heaven"
Robert Murray McCheyne
MICHAEL GRANT
PRÉSIDENT DE LA CLASSICAL ASSOCIATION OF ENGLAND
JESUS, 1977
The most potent figure, not only in the history of religion, but in world history as a whole, is Jesus Christ: the maker of one of the few revolutions which have lasted. Millions of men and women for century after century have found his life and teaching overwhelmingly significant and moving. And there is ample reason . . . why this should still be so.

Prayer must carry on our work as much as preaching; he preacheth not heartily to his people that will not pray for them.

Godly concern is caring about important things for the right reasons. It is also accompanied by a trust in God’s ultimate control and faithfulness. This kind of concern helps you be responsible to God and does not send you into a confused status. It will involve a focus on the responsibilities for today, eternal goals and others… For your concern to be the right kind of concern you must be focused on what is true and helpful from God’s perspective (see 1 Cor. 7:32-33; 2 Cor. 11:28; Phil. 2:20)… [However], ungodly concern (anxiety) goes beyond reasonable concern and involves worry about mere possibilities. When we are anxious, we are not focused on God and what is true and helpful. When we are anxious, we are often concerned that something we want to happen may not happen. Therefore, we are focused on difficulties of the future, temporal matters, and self (see Matthew 6:31-32).

M.R. DeHaan
If we would talk more about the Lord and praise Him, we would have less time to talk about ourselves.

Human nature is indeed in the grip of an overwhelming army of occupation. Its natural aim, it can truthfully be said, is pleasure; and when we consider the amount of time, energy, money, interest and enthusiasm that men and women give to the satisfaction of this aim we can appreciate the accuracy of James’ diagnosis; and Christians can use it as a reliable yard stick by which to measure the sincerity of their religion. Is God or pleasure the dominant concern of their life?
R.V.G. Tasker
Chris Frost
The reason God values process is because process requires relationship. By shortcutting the process we actually shortcut relationship and short change ourselves.
Chris Frost
When the drama of history is over, Jesus Christ will stand alone on the stage. All the great figures of history . . . will realize that they have been but actors in a drama produced by another.

Approaching one young man, I held up my Bible and asked, “Do you believe the Bible is the Word of God?’’
“Yes!” he said with confidence and conviction.
I probed him further. “Do you believe the Bible is true?” “Yes!” rang the answer again.
Then I asked, “Is it historically accurate and reliable?” “Of course!” he replied with confidence.
Then I lowered my voice and asked him, “Why?”
He looked back at me, shrugged his shoulders, and said,“That’s a tough one.”

Unbroken people…cannot rejoice over repentant sinners. They are consumed with a sense of their own rights and expectations. And if they don’t get the treatment they feel they deserve, they throw a pity party for themselves.

Jesus Christ belonged to the true race of the prophets. He saw with an open eye the mystery of the soul. Drawn by its severe harmony, ravished with its beauty, he lived in it, and had his being there.Alone in all history he estimated the greatness of man.

God's purpose is to glorify Himself through His church. He is glorified as the church is true to Him and His Word, as the church mirrors His purity and holiness. Failure to keep the church pure brings discredit to God on this earth and brings to His name great shame in the failure of those who profess to know Him.
Richard P. Belcher
WILLIAM NEIL
THE REDISCOVERY OF THE BIBLE, 1954
Perhaps the most disturbing factor in the whole question of the modern attitude to the Bible is that all of us, inside and outside the Church, young and old, believers and agnostics, share to some extent the temper of the age we live in. None of us can remain untouched by the various undercurrents of contemporary thought. We all have part in the general perplexity and confusion of mind. For some it is offset by ingrained religious habits, for others by personal religious experience which is impervious to doubt. For most of us, however, the position is rather that we are at a loss to know what to make of the Bible. We should welcome some reassurance that it has not disintegrated under the impact of the modern world and that it still stands unimpaired, a rock among shifting sands.
