La nature ne va pas à la recherche du christianisme, mais le christianisme va frapper à la porte de la nature et, si possible, la réveiller de sa léthargie. . . . Et puisque la répugnance du cœur humain à accueillir les ouvertures de l'Évangile constitue un obstacle plus puissant à sa réception parmi les hommes que tous les océans et continents que les missionnaires doivent traverser, il devrait y avoir une série de mesures agressives en faveur du christianisme, menées d'un âge à l'autre, dans tous les climats et pays de la chrétienté.

Nature does not go forth in search of Christianity;but Christianity goes forth to knock at the door of nature and, if possible, awaken her out of her sluggishness. . . . And seeing, that the disinclination of the human heart to entertain the overtures of the gospel, forms a mightier obstacle to its reception among men than all the oceans and continents which missionaries have to traverse, there ought to be a series of aggressive measures in behalf of Christianity, carried on from one age to another, in every clime and country of Christendom.
