La persévérance peut être définie comme l'opération continue du Saint-Esprit dans le croyant, par laquelle l'œuvre de la grâce divine, commencée dans le cœur, est poursuivie et menée à son terme. C'est parce que Dieu n'abandonne jamais son œuvre que les croyants continuent à tenir jusqu'à la fin.
