Comme il est dangereux de joindre quoi que ce soit de notre propre cru à la justice du Christ, dans la recherche de la justification devant Dieu ! Jésus-Christ ne supportera jamais cela ; cela rejaillit sur son œuvre de manière déshonorante. Il sera tout, ou rien, dans notre justification. S'il a achevé l'œuvre, quel besoin y a-t-il de nos ajouts ? Et sinon, à quoi servent-ils ? Pouvons-nous achever ce que le Christ lui-même n'a pu achever ? A-t-il achevé l'œuvre, et partagera-t-il jamais avec nous la gloire et la louange de cette œuvre ? Non, non ; le Christ n'est pas un demi-sauveur. Il est difficile d'amener les cœurs orgueilleux à se reposer sur Christ pour la justice. Dieu humilie les orgueilleux en appelant les pécheurs à renoncer entièrement à leur propre justice et à s'en remettre à Christ pour leur justification.

How dangerous it is to join anything of our own to the righteousness of Christ, in pursuit of justification before God! Jesus Christ will never endure this; it reflects upon His work dishonorably. He will be all, or none, in our justification. If He has finished the work, what need is there of our additions? And if not, to what purpose are they? Can we finish that which Christ Himself could not complete? Did He finish the work, and will He ever divide the glory and praise of it with us? No, no; Christ is no half-Savior. It is a hard thing to bring proud hearts to rest upon Christ for righteousness. God humbles the proud by calling sinners wholly from their own righteousness to Christ for their justification.
