Le facteur le plus troublant dans toute cette question de l'attitude moderne envers la Bible est peut-être que nous tous, à l'intérieur et à l'extérieur de l'Église, jeunes et vieux, croyants et agnostiques, partageons dans une certaine mesure le tempérament de l'époque dans laquelle nous vivons. Aucun d'entre nous ne peut rester à l'écart des divers courants de la pensée contemporaine. Nous participons tous à la perplexité et à la confusion générale des esprits. Pour certains, elle est compensée par des habitudes religieuses bien ancrées, pour d'autres par une expérience religieuse personnelle imperméable au doute. Pour la plupart d'entre nous, cependant, la situation est plutôt que nous ne savons pas quoi faire de la Bible. Nous serions heureux d'être rassurés sur le fait qu'elle ne s'est pas désintégrée sous l'impact du monde moderne et qu'elle se tient toujours intacte, un rocher parmi les sables mouvants.

Perhaps the most disturbing factor in the whole question of the modern attitude to the Bible is that all of us, inside and outside the Church, young and old, believers and agnostics, share to some extent the temper of the age we live in. None of us can remain untouched by the various undercurrents of contemporary thought. We all have part in the general perplexity and confusion of mind. For some it is offset by ingrained religious habits, for others by personal religious experience which is impervious to doubt. For most of us, however, the position is rather that we are at a loss to know what to make of the Bible. We should welcome some reassurance that it has not disintegrated under the impact of the modern world and that it still stands unimpaired, a rock among shifting sands.
