Si les bagatelles sont des éléments essentiels de la providence divine, qu'en est-il du mal ? Le mal est souvent très significatif. L'événement le plus important qui se soit jamais produit était, sous un aspect, horriblement mauvais. La crucifixion de Jésus, du point de vue de ceux qui l'ont crucifiée, était grotesquement mauvaise. Pourtant, même si la mise à mort du Christ était une atrocité en soi, quel événement était aussi vital et ses effets aussi bénéfiques que la mort du Christ ? Si la providence de Dieu n'inclut pas le mal, elle n'inclut pas l'événement le plus important qui ait jamais eu lieu.

If trifles are vital parts of divine providence, what of evil? Evil is often vastly significant. The most important event which ever occurred was, in one aspect, horribly evil. The crucifixion of Jesus from the standpoint of the crucifiers was grotesquely wicked. Yet, even though the killing of Christ was atrocity itself, what event was so vital and its effects so beneficial as the death of Christ? If God’s providence does not include evil, it does not include the most important event which has ever taken place.
