La foi

La foi, cependant, est une chose que Dieu fait en nous. Elle nous change et nous renaissons de Dieu, Jean 1. La foi met à mort le vieil Adam et fait de nous des hommes très différents par le cœur, l'esprit et toutes nos forces ; et elle est accompagnée du Saint-Esprit. O, quand il s'agit de la foi, quelle chose vivante, créative, active et puissante c'est. Elle ne peut faire que du bien à tout moment. Elle n'attend jamais de se demander s'il y a du bon travail à faire, mais plutôt, avant que la question ne soit soulevée, elle a fait l'acte et continue à le faire. Un homme qui n'agit pas de cette manière est un homme sans foi. Il tâtonne pour trouver la foi et cherche de bonnes œuvres, mais ne sait ni ce qu'est la foi ni ce que sont les bonnes œuvres. Néanmoins, il continue à dire des bêtises sur la foi et les bonnes œuvres.

Faith, however, is something that God effects in us. It changes us and we are reborn form God, John 1. Faith puts the old Adam to death and makes us quite different men in heart, in mind, and in all our powers; and it is accompanied by the Holy Spirit. O, when it comes to faith, what a living, creative, active, powerful thing it is. It cannot do other than good at all times. It never waits to ask whether there is some good work to do, rather, before the question is raised, it has done the deed, and keeps on doing it. A man not active in this way is a man without faith. He is groping about for faith and searching for good works, but knows neither what faith is nor what good works are. Nevertheless, he keeps on talking nonsense about faith and good works.
