La repentance est le compagnon inséparable de la foi. Tant que nous marchons par la foi et non par la vue, la crainte de la repentance brille dans l'œil de la foi. Il n'y a pas de véritable repentance qui ne vienne de la foi en Jésus, et il n'y a pas de véritable foi en Jésus qui ne soit teintée de repentance. La foi et la repentance, comme des jumeaux siamois, sont intimement liées. La foi et la repentance ne sont que deux rayons d'une même roue, deux poignées d'une même charrue. La repentance a été bien décrite comme un cœur brisé pour le péché et par le péché, et on peut tout aussi bien en parler comme d'un retournement et d'un retour. C'est un changement d'esprit des plus profonds et des plus radicaux, qui s'accompagne d'une tristesse pour le passé et d'une résolution de s'amender à l'avenir. Le repentir du péché et la foi dans le pardon divin sont les voies et la trame du tissu de la véritable conversion.

Repentance is the inseparable companion of faith. All the while that we walk by faith and not by sight, the fear of repentance glitters in the eye of faith. That is not true repentance which does not come of faith in Jesus; and that is not true faith in Jesus which is not tinctured with repentance. Faith and repentance, like the Siamese twins, are vitally joined together. Faith and repentance are but two spokes in the same wheel, two handles of the same plow. Repentance has been well described as a heart broken for sin and from sin, and it may equally well be spoken of as turning and returning. It is a change of mind of the most thorough and radical sort, and it is attended with sorrow for the past and a resolve of amendment in the future. Repentance of sin and faith in divine pardon are the ways and woof of the fabric of real conversion.
