La repentance, telle que Jésus l'a décrite, implique la reconnaissance de l'état de péché total de l'individu et le fait de se détourner de soi et du péché pour se tourner vers Dieu (cf. 1 Thessaloniciens 1,9). Loin d'être une œuvre humaine, elle est le résultat inévitable de l'œuvre de Dieu dans un cœur humain. Et elle représente toujours la fin de toute tentative humaine de gagner la faveur de Dieu. C'est bien plus qu'un simple changement d'avis - cela implique un changement complet de cœur, d'attitude, d'intérêt et de direction. C'est une conversion dans tous les sens du terme.

Repentance as Jesus characterized it…involves a recognition of one’s utter sinfulness and a turning from self and sin to God (cf. 1 Thessalonians 1:9). Far from being a human work, it is the inevitable result of God’s work in a human heart. And it always represents the end of any human attempt to earn God’s favor. It is much more than a mere change of mind – it involves a complete change of heart, attitude, interest, and direction. It is a conversion in every sense of the word.
