La croix n'est pas un symbole nébuleux et indéfinissable de l'amour du don de soi ; au contraire, la croix est la démonstration monumentale de la manière dont Dieu peut être juste et pardonner aux pécheurs coupables. Sur la croix, Dieu, ayant imputé les péchés de son peuple au Christ, prononce le jugement sur son Fils en tant que représentant de son peuple. Là, sur la croix, Dieu déverse les flacons de sa colère sans y mêler la miséricorde, jusqu'à ce que son Fils s'écrie : "Mon Dieu, mon Dieu, pourquoi m'as-tu abandonné ?" (Psaume 22:1 ; Matthieu 27:46).

The cross is not a nebulous, indefinable symbol of self-giving love; on the contrary, the cross is the monumental display of how God can be just and still pardon guilty sinners. At the cross, God, having imputed the sins of His people to Christ, pronounces judgment upon His Son as the representative of His people. There on the cross God pours out the vials of His wrath unmixed with mercy until His Son cries out, “My God, my God, why have you forsaken me?” (Psalm 22:1; Matthew 27:46).
