Les effets de l'œuvre du Christ sont donc, même pour l'incroyant, indiscutables et historiques. Elle a chassé la cruauté, elle a freiné la passion, elle a marqué le suicide, elle a puni et réprimé l'infanticide. Il n'y a guère de classe à laquelle il n'ait remédié. Elle a sauvé le gladiateur ; elle a libéré l'esclave ; elle a protégé le captif ; elle a soigné le malade ; elle a abrité l'orphelin ; elle a élevé la femme ; elle a enveloppé comme d'un halo d'innocence sacrée les tendres années de l'enfant. Dans toutes les régions de la vie, son influence bénéfique s'est fait sentir... . . Il a créé la conception même de la charité et a élargi les limites de son obligation du cercle étroit d'un quartier aux plus vastes horizons de la race humaine.

The effects, then, of the work of Christ are even to the unbeliever indisputable and historical. It expelled cruelty; it curbed passion; it branded suicide; it punished and repressed infanticide. There was hardly a class whose wrongs it did not remedy. It rescued the gladiator; it freed the slave; it protected the captive; it nursed the sick; it sheltered the orphan; it elevated the woman; it shrouded as with a halo of sacred innocence the tender years of the child. In every region of life it’s ameliorating influence was felt. . . . It created the very conception of charity and broadened the limits of its obligation from the narrow circle of a neighbourhood to the widest horizons of the human race.
