La Bible a été mon guide dans la perplexité et mon réconfort dans la détresse. Elle m'a réveillé lorsque j'étais sur le déclin, et m'a animé dans la langueur. D'autres écrits peuvent être bons, mais ils manquent de certitude et de force. La Bible apporte avec elle ses propres références, et prouve l'esprit et la vie de l'âme. Dans les autres écrits, j'entends les paroles d'un étranger ou d'un serviteur. Dans la Bible, j'entends le langage de mon Père et de mon ami. D'autres livres ne contiennent que l'image du pain. La Bible me présente la vraie manne, et me nourrit du pain de la vie.

The Bible has been my guide in perplexity, and my comfort in trouble. It has roused me when declining, and animated me in languor. Other writings may be good, but they want certainty and force. The Bible carries its own credentials along with it, and proves spirit and life to the soul. In other writings I hear the words of a stranger or a servant. In the Bible I hear the language of my Father and my friend. Other books contain only the picture of bread. The Bible presents me with real manna, and feeds me with the bread of life.
