Nous ne devons pas nous cacher que le vrai christianisme comporte une croix quotidienne dans cette vie, alors qu'il nous offre une couronne de gloire dans la vie à venir. La chair doit être crucifiée quotidiennement. Il faut résister chaque jour au diable. Le monde doit être vaincu chaque jour. Il y a une guerre à mener, et une bataille à livrer. Tout cela est l'accompagnement inséparable de la vraie religion. Le ciel ne peut être gagné sans elle. Il n'y a jamais eu de mot plus vrai que le vieux dicton : "Pas de croix, pas de couronne !". Si nous n'avons jamais découvert cela par l'expérience, nos âmes sont dans un piètre état.

We must not conceal from ourselves that true Christianity brings with it a daily cross in this life, while it offers us a crown of glory in the life to come. The flesh must be daily crucified. The devil must be daily resisted. The world must be daily overcome. There is a warfare to be waged, and a battle to be fought. All this is the inseparable accompaniment of true religion. Heaven is not to be won without it. Never was there a truer word than the old saying, “No cross, no crown!” If we never found this out by experience, our souls are in a poor condition.
