La science de ce monde

La science de ce monde, qui est devenue une grande puissance, a, surtout au siècle dernier, analysé tout ce que les livres anciens nous ont transmis de divin. Après cette analyse cruelle, les savants de ce monde n'ont plus rien de tout ce qui était sacré autrefois. Mais ils n'ont analysé que les parties et n'ont pas tenu compte de l'ensemble, et leur cécité est merveilleuse. Et pourtant, l'ensemble se tient toujours fermement devant leurs yeux, et les portes de l'enfer ne prévaudront pas contre lui. N'a-t-il pas duré dix-neuf siècles, n'est-il pas encore une force vivante, une force en mouvement dans l'âme individuelle et dans les masses humaines ? Elle est toujours aussi forte et vivante même dans l'âme des athées, qui ont tout détruit ! Car même ceux qui ont renié le christianisme et l'attaquent, dans leur être le plus profond, suivent encore l'idéal chrétien, car jusqu'à présent, ni leur subtilité ni l'ardeur de leur cœur n'ont pu créer un idéal de l'homme et de la vertu plus élevé que l'idéal donné par le Christ d'autrefois.

The science of this world, which has become a great power, has, especially in the last century, analyzed everything divine handed down to us in the old books. After this cruel analysis the learned of the world have nothing left of all that was sacred of old. But they have only analyzed the parts and overlooked the whole, and indeed their blindness is marvelous. Yet the whole still stands steadfastly before their eyes, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Has it not lasted nineteen centuries, is it not still a living, a moving power in the individual soul and in the masses of people? It is still as strong and living even in the souls of atheists, who have destroyed everything! For even those who have renounced Christianity and attack it, in their inmost being still follow the Christian ideal, for hitherto neither their subtlety nor the ardor of their hearts has been able to create a higher ideal of man and of virtue than the ideal given by Christ of old.
