Ce que Jésus a souffert alors pour nous et pour notre salut, nous ne pouvons le savoir, car pendant ces trois heures, il est resté suspendu sur sa croix dans le silence et les ténèbres. . . . Mais vers la fin de ce temps, son angoisse a culminé et, buvant jusqu'à la lie la coupe de l'humiliation et de l'amertume, il a poussé ce cri mystérieux, dont l'homme ne pourra jamais comprendre toute la signification : "ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI", "Mon Dieu, mon Dieu, pourquoi m'as-tu abandonné".

What Jesus suffered then for us and for our salvation we cannot know, for during those three hours he hung upon his cross in silence and darkness. . . . But towards the close of that time his anguish culminated and, drinking to the very deepest dregs the cup of humiliation and bitterness, he uttered that mysterious cry, the full significance of which will never be fathomed by man—“ELI, ELI, LAMA SABACHTHANI?”, “My God, my God,why hast thou forsaken me?”
