La conscience est cette faculté en moi qui s'attache à ce que je connais de plus élevé, et qui me dit ce que ce que je connais de plus élevé exige que je fasse. C'est l'œil de l'âme qui regarde soit vers Dieu, soit vers ce qu'elle considère comme la plus haute autorité. Si j'ai l'habitude de regarder constamment vers Dieu, ma conscience présentera toujours la loi parfaite de Dieu et m'indiquera ce que je dois faire. La question est de savoir si j'obéirai. Je dois faire un effort pour garder ma conscience si sensible que je marche sans offense. Je devrais vivre dans une sympathie si parfaite avec le Fils de Dieu qu'en toute circonstance l'esprit de mon esprit soit renouvelé. La seule chose qui maintient la conscience sensible à Lui est l'habitude d'être ouvert à Dieu à l'intérieur. Quand il y a un débat, abandonnez. Il n'y a pas de débat possible lorsque la conscience parle.

Conscience is that faculty in me which attaches itself to the highest that I know, and tells me what the highest I know demands that I do. It is the eye of the soul which looks out either toward God or toward what it regards as the highest authority. If I am in the habit of steadily facing toward God, my conscience will always introduce God’s perfect law and indicate what I should do. The point is, will I obey? I have to make an effort to keep my conscience so sensitive that I walk without offense. I should be living in such perfect sympathy with God’s Son that in every circumstance the spirit of my mind is renewed. The one thing that keeps the conscience sensitive to Him is the habit of being open to God on the inside. When there is any debate, quit. There is no debate possible when conscience speaks.
