Après ce répit, les chrétiens furent à nouveau persécutés, cette fois par Marc-Aurèle, en l'an 61. L'un de ceux qui souffrirent cette fois fut Polycarpe, le vénérable évêque de Smyrne... Alors qu'il entrait dans le stade avec ses gardes, on entendit une voix venant du ciel qui disait : "Sois fort, Polycarpe, et joue l'homme." Personne à proximité n'a vu quelqu'un parler, mais beaucoup de gens ont entendu la voix. Amené devant le tribunal et la foule, Polycarpe a refusé de renier le Christ, bien que le proconsul l'ait supplié de "réfléchir à toi-même et d'avoir pitié de ton grand âge. Reproche le Christ et je te libérerai". Polycarpe répondit : "J'ai servi le Christ pendant 86 ans et il ne m'a jamais fait de mal. Comment pourrais-je blasphémer mon Roi, qui m'a sauvé ?" Menacé par les bêtes sauvages et le feu, Polycarpe a tenu bon.

After the respite, the Christians again came under persecution, this time from Marcus Aurelius, in A.D. 61. One of those who suffered this time was Polycarp, the venerable bishop pf Smyrna… As he entered the stadium with his guards, a voice from heaven was heard to say, “Be strong, Polycarp, and play the man.” No one nearby saw anyone speaking but many people heard the voice. Brought before the tribunal and the crowd, Polycarp refused to deny Christ, although the proconsul begged him to “consider yourself and have pity on your great age. Reproach Christ and I will release you.” Polycarp replied, “Eighty-six years I have served Him, and He never once wronged me. How can I blaspheme my King, who saved me?” Threatened with wild beasts and fire, Polycarp stood his ground.
