L'habitude pernicieuse de citer des textes de preuve - souvent pour soutenir notre propre point de vue - a la vie dure. On peut prouver tout ce que l'on veut en sortant un texte de son contexte, ou en oubliant commodément un autre passage qui donne un point de vue différent sur la question. Si nous voulons savoir ce que Jésus a enseigné sur un sujet particulier, nous devons patiemment essayer de trouver tout ce qu'il a dit à ce sujet. . . . Il faut surtout se rappeler que tout son enseignement est lié à un thème global, l'Évangile qu'il a prêché.

The pernicious habit of quoting proof-texts—often to support our own point of view—dies hard. You can prove anything you want to by taking a text out of context, or by conveniently forgetting another passage which gives a different slant on the matter. If we want to know what Jesus taught on a particular subject, we must patiently try to find all he said about it. . . . Above all we must remember that all his teaching was linked to one all-embracing theme—the gospel he preached.
