Toute vraie prière a son arrière-plan et son avant-plan. Le premier plan de la prière est le désir intense et immédiat d'une certaine bénédiction qui semble absolument nécessaire à l'âme ; le second plan de la prière est le désir calme et sincère que la volonté de Dieu, quelle qu'elle soit, soit faite. Quelle image que la prière parfaite de Jésus à Gethsémané ! Devant, brûle le désir ardent d'échapper à la mort et de vivre ; mais derrière, se dresse, calme et fort, le désir ardent de toute la vie d'accomplir la volonté de Dieu... Supprimez le premier plan, qu'il n'y ait aucune expression de la volonté de celui qui prie, et il reste une pure soumission qui est presque du fatalisme. Sans l'arrière-plan, qu'il n'y ait pas d'acceptation de la volonté de Dieu, et la prière n'est qu'une expression de la volonté propre, une revendication irascible du choix non corrigé de celui qui prie. Ce n'est que lorsque les deux sont réunis, le désir particulier reposant sur la soumission universelle, la soumission universelle s'ouvrant sur le désir particulier, que l'image est parfaite et la prière complète.

Every true prayer has its background and its foreground. The foreground of prayer is the intense, immediate desire for a certain blessing which seems to be absolutely necessary for the soul to have; the background of prayer is the quiet, earnest desire that the will of God, whatever it may be, should be done. What a picture is the perfect prayer of Jesus in Gethsemane! In front burns the strong desire to escape death and to live; but behind there stands, calm and strong, the craving of the whole life for the doing of the will of God… Leave out the foreground, let there be no expression of the will of him who prays, and there is left a pure submission which is almost fatalism. Leave out the background, let there be no acceptance of the will of God, and the prayer is only an expression of self-will, a petulant claiming of the uncorrected choice of him who prays. Only when the two are there together, the special desire resting on the universal submission, the universal submission opening into the special desire is the picture perfect and the prayer complete.
