Le mot grec pour église, ecclesia, est composé d'un préfixe et d'une racine. Le préfixe est ek - hors de. La racine est le verbe coleo, appeler. Dans le Nouveau Testament, l'Église est composée de ceux qui sont appelés à sortir du monde, des ténèbres, de la damnation, du paganisme, pour devenir membres du corps du Christ.
