Dans le cas de Dieu, s'il avait dit dans l'infinie souveraineté de sa volonté absolue : "Je ne veux pas de substitut, mais chacun souffrira pour lui-même, celui qui pèche mourra", personne n'aurait pu murmurer. C'est la grâce, et seulement la grâce, qui a conduit l'esprit divin à dire : "J'accepte un substitut. Il y aura une souffrance par procuration ; et Ma vengeance sera satisfaite, et Ma miséricorde sera gratifiée."

In Gods case, if He had said in the infinite sovereignty of His absolute will, “I will have no substitute, but each man shall suffer for himself, he who sinneth shall die,” none could have murmured. It was grace, and only grace which led the divine mind to say, “I will accept of a substitute. There shall be a vicarious suffering; and My vengeance shall be content, and My mercy shall be gratified.”
