J'essaie ici d'empêcher quiconque de dire la chose vraiment stupide que les gens disent souvent à son sujet : "Je suis prêt à accepter Jésus comme un grand maître de morale, mais je n'accepte pas sa prétention à être Dieu." C'est la seule chose que nous ne devons pas dire. Un homme qui ne serait qu'un homme et qui dirait le genre de choses que Jésus a dites ne serait pas un grand maître de morale. Il serait soit un fou, au même titre que l'homme qui dit être un œuf poché, soit le diable de l'enfer. Vous devez faire votre choix. Ou bien cet homme était, et est, le Fils de Dieu : ou bien un fou ou quelque chose de pire. Vous pouvez le faire taire comme un fou, vous pouvez lui cracher dessus et le tuer comme un démon ; ou vous pouvez tomber à ses pieds et l'appeler Seigneur et Dieu. Mais ne venons pas avec une quelconque absurdité condescendante sur le fait qu'Il soit un grand professeur humain. Il ne nous a pas laissé cette possibilité. Il n'en avait pas l'intention.

I am trying here to prevent anyone saying the really foolish thing that people often say about Him: “I’m ready to accept Jesus as a great moral teacher, but I don’t accept His claim to be God.” That is the one thing we must not say. A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic—on a level with the man who says he is a poached egg— or else he would be the Devil of Hell. You must make your choice. Either this man was, and is, the Son of God: or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool, you can spit at Him and kill Him as a demon; or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronising nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us. He did not intend to.
