Quand tu pries devant les autres, observe ce à quoi tu consacres le plus de soin et de zèle, soit dans l'extérieur, soit dans l'intérieur de la prière, ce qui est exposé à l'œil et à l'oreille des hommes, ou ce qui doit être préparé pour l'œil et l'oreille de Dieu ; la posture pieuse de ton corps, ou la dévotion intérieure de ton âme ; la pompe de tes paroles ou la puissance de ta foi ; l'agitation de tes esprits corporels dans la véhémence de ta voix, ou la ferveur de ton esprit dans des affections déchirantes. Ces travaux intérieurs de l'âme dans la prière sont l'âme même de la prière.

When thou prayest before others, observe on what thou bestowest thy chief care and zeal, whether in the externals or internals of prayer, that which is exposed to the eye and ear of men, or that which should be prepared for the eye and ear of God; the devout posture of thy body, or the inward devotion of thy soul; the pomp of thy words or the power of thy faith; the agitation of thy bodily spirits in the vehemency of thy voice, or the fervency of thy spirit in heartbreaking affections. These inward workings of the soul in prayer, are the very soul of prayer.
