L'amour de soi peut produire une gratitude purement naturelle envers Dieu. Cela peut se produire à cause d'idées fausses sur Dieu, comme s'il était tout amour et toute miséricorde, et non justice vengeresse, ou comme si Dieu était tenu d'aimer une personne en raison de sa valeur. Pour ces raisons, les hommes peuvent aimer un Dieu de leur propre imagination, alors qu'ils n'ont aucun amour pour le vrai Dieu.

Self-love can produce a merely natural gratitude to God. This can happen through wrong ideas about God, as if He were all love and mercy, and no avenging justice, or as if God were bound to love a person because of the person’s worthiness. On these grounds men may love a God of their own imaginations, when they have no love at all for the true God.
