Le dessein de la science

"Allons-nous tourner le dos à la science parce qu'elle est perçue comme une menace pour Dieu, en abandonnant toute promesse de faire progresser notre compréhension de la nature et de l'appliquer à l'allégement de la souffrance et à l'amélioration de l'humanité ? Ou bien tournerons-nous le dos à la foi, en concluant que la science a rendu la vie spirituelle inutile et que les symboles religieux traditionnels peuvent désormais être remplacés par des gravures de la double hélice sur nos autels ?

Ces deux choix sont profondément dangereux. Tous deux nient la vérité. Tous deux diminueront la noblesse de l'humanité. Ils seront tous deux dévastateurs pour notre avenir. Et tous deux sont inutiles. Le Dieu de la Bible est aussi le Dieu du génome. Il peut être adoré dans la cathédrale ou dans le laboratoire. Sa création est majestueuse, impressionnante, complexe et belle - et il ne peut pas être en guerre avec lui-même. Seuls les humains imparfaits peuvent engager de telles batailles. Et nous seuls pouvons les terminer".

“Will we turn our backs on science because it is perceived as a threat to God, abandoning all the promise of advancing our understanding of nature and applying that to the alleviation of suffering and the betterment of humankind? Alternatively, will we turn our backs on faith, concluding that science has rendered the spiritual life no longer necessary, and that traditional religious symbols can now be replaced by engravings of the double helix on our alters?

Both of these choices are profoundly dangerous. Both deny truth. Both will diminish the nobility of humankind. Both will be devastating to our future. And both are unnecessary. The God of the Bible is also the God of the genome. He can be worshipped in the cathedral or in the laboratory. His creation is majestic, awesome, intricate and beautiful - and it cannot be at war with itself. Only we imperfect humans can start such battles. And only we can end them.”
