Priscilla Shirer
Satan’s ploy is to make you believe your core value as a person is tied to how much work you do, how much activity you can accomplish, how much stuff you can accumulate, how much business you can generate. In order to possess any worth under this system—just like Israel under Pharaoh’s rule—you’ve got to be able to rattle off everything you’ve been doing, one by one, adding it all up into a big gob of bullet points and checklists that ought to impress anybody.

I initially examined Christianity in order to write a book making a mockery of it… After extensive research, however, I discovered that Christianity is not a religion of men and women working their way to God through “good works.” Nor is it obedience to a pattern of religious ritual. Rather, it is a relationship with a living God through His Son Jesus Christ. To my amazement, I was confronted with a person, not a religion. Here was a person who made staggering claims about Himself, along with profound claims on my life. Jesus was so different from what I had expected. Other religious leaders put their teachings out in front. Jesus put Himself out in front. Others would ask, “How are you responding to my teachings?” Jesus asked, “How are you related to Me?”

“So long as we are occupied with any other object than God Himself, there will be neither rest for the heart nor peace for the mind. But when we receive all that enters our lives as from His hand, then, no matter what may be our circumstances or surroundings--whether in a hovel or prison-dungeon, or at a martyr's stake--we shall be enabled to say, ‘The lines are fallen unto me in pleasant places’ (Psalms 16:6). But that is the language of faith, not of sight nor of sense.”

David Hegg, Appointed to Preach, Christian Focus Publications, 1999, p. 70.
We are to reflect Christ in all that we say and do. And the Christ of Scripture is the humble, suffering servant who, in spite of great opposition, false accusations, and public ridicule, remained faithful to the heavenly calling.
David Hegg, Appointed to Preach, Christian Focus Publications, 1999, p. 70.
John MacArthur
“Healing was a miraculous sign gift to be used for special purposes. It was not intended as a permanent way to keep the Christian community in perfect health. Yet today most charismatics teach that God wants every Christian well. If that is true, why does God allow Christians to get sick in the first place?”
John MacArthur
William S. Plumer, The Ten Commandments.
Anything relating to the true God – His being, His nature, His will, His works, His worship, His service, or His doctrine – pertains to God's name. This commandment extends to the state of men's thoughts and hearts – as well as to their speech. To take God's name in vain, is to use it in any frivolous, false, inconsiderate, irreverent, or otherwise wicked manner. The scope of this commandment is to secure the holy and reverent use of all that by which God makes Himself known to His people; and so to guard His sacred name against all that is calculated to make it contemptible. The manner of taking His name is to be grave, solemn, intelligent, thoughtful, sincere, and with godly fear.

It is important for us to see the close connection between repentance and forgiveness, because while no amount of repentance can ever merit forgiveness in the sight of God, without repentance no soul will ever be saved. Repentance is the telltale mark of the grace of God at work in our lives. Saving faith and true repentance are always found together. Saved souls are repentant souls.
Kent Hughes, Luke – Volume 1, 1998, page 109.

When we love money, we bring upon ourselves unnecessary sorrows that are inherited consequences of this sin. Grief, guilt, dissatisfaction, remorse, lack of fulfillment, worry, disregard and despair are some of the many wounds caused by the sword of money love.

“We must be the same person in private and in public. Only the Christian worldview gives us the basis for this kind of integrity.”

John Walvoord, Four Views on Hell, ed. William Crockett, Zondervan, 1996, p. 27.
The problem here is the obvious lack of understanding of the infinite nature of sin as contrasted to the infinite righteousness of God. If the slightest sin is infinite in its significance, then it also demands infinite punishment as a divine judgment. Though it is common for all Christians to wish that there were some way out of the doctrine of eternal punishment because of its inexorable and unyielding revelation of divine judgment, one must rely in Christian faith on the doctrine that God is a God of infinite righteousness and well as infinite love. While on the one hand He bestows infinite grace to those who trust Him, He must, on the other hand, inflict eternal punishment on those who spurn His grace.
John Walvoord, Four Views on Hell, ed. William Crockett, Zondervan, 1996, p. 27.
Sam Storms, The Life-Changing Power of Knowing God, p. 51.
This [boredom] is why people are so prone to an addictive lifestyle. Many people who fall into sinful addictions are people who were once terminally bored. The reason why addictions are so powerful is that they tap into that place in our hearts that was made for transcendent communion and spiritual romance. These addictive habits either dull and deaden our yearnings for a satisfaction we fear we’ll never find or they provide an alternative counterfeit fulfillment that we think will bring long-term happiness, counterfeits like cocaine, overeating, illicit affairs, busyness, efficiency, image, or obsession with physical beauty. They all find their power in the inescapable yearning of the human heart to be fascinated and pleased and enthralled. Our hearts will invariably lead us either to the fleeting pleasures of addiction or to God.
Sam Storms, The Life-Changing Power of Knowing God, p. 51.
Charles H. Spurgeon
It is the burning lava of the soul that has a furnace within- a very volcano of grief and sorrow- it is that burning lava of prayer that finds its way to God. No prayer ever reaches God's heart which does not come from our hearts.
Charles H. Spurgeon
John Gerstner, Theology for Everyman, Moody, 1965, Chapter 10.
God has no obligation to sinful men except to condemn. He may or may not, as His wisdom dictates, exercise mercy upon them. But mercy is not something which God must offer anybody. He offered no mercy to the angels when they sinned. And He says with respect to fallen human creatures: “I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy” (Rom. 9:18). He strongly insists that mercy is optional with Him and a matter of His sovereign pleasure alone.
John Gerstner, Theology for Everyman, Moody, 1965, Chapter 10.

Praising God is one of the highest and purest acts of religion. In prayer we act like men; in praise we act like angels.

“Are you still diligently living for God and serving Him, even in these last days? Now is not the time to ease up, but to charge forward and continue living for the Lord.”

When the enemy rages and attempts to trample upon your territory, remember that God has not called you to be defeated by the tactics of the enemy. God wants you to win. God will fight for you – if you let Him. When you take your hands off and allow God to put His hands on your situation, He will fight your battle. This battle belongs to The Lord. With God, you will not be defeated. Don’t try to fight the battle alone – God is with you, engage His Army. When God is for you, who can stand against you? No one. God is your Battle Ax. God is your Shield. God is your Provider. God is your Protector. Trust Him. Trust that He’s got you every step of the way.

C.S. Lewis
[The flesh] knows that if the spiritual life gets hold of it, all its self-centredness and self-will are going to be killed and it is ready to fight tooth and nail to avoid that.
