We all know people, even unbelievers, who seem to be natural servants. They are always serving others one way or another. But God does not get the glory; they do. It is their reputation that is enhanced. But when we, natural servants or not, serve in dependence upon the grace of God with the strength He supplies, God is glorified.

Who can do more? We with our own energy and wisdom, or the God who created heaven and earth and who can work in space-time history with a power which none of us has?
Francis Schaeffer ; Death in the City, IVP, 1969, p. 142.

The Bible defines sin as craving something more than God. Sin is making something more important than God.

Sinclair Ferguson, The Holy Spirit, InterVarsity Press, 1996, p. 238.
The hallmark of the preaching which the Spirit effects is “boldness”… As in the Old Testament, when the Spirit fills the servant of God He “clothes himself” with that person, and aspects of the Spirit’s authority are illustrated in the courageous declaration of the Word of God. This boldness appears to involve exactly what it denotes: there is freedom of speech. We catch occasional glimpses of this in the Acts of the Apostles. What was said of the early New England preacher Thomas Hooker becomes a visible reality: when he preached, those who heard him felt that he could pick up a king and put him in his pocket!

Faith…involves trusting in the future promises of God and waiting for their fulfillment.

It is better that we should not sing of sadness. There are sad notes enough already in the world’s air. We should sing of cheer, of joy, of hope. We do not need to be defeated in our battles, to sink under our loads, to be crushed beneath our sorrows. We may be victorious. Sorrow comes into every life; we cannot shut it away, but we can be conquerors in it. When the snow melts away in the springtime, I have often seen under it sweet flowers in bloom. The very drifts are like warm blankets to keep them safe. So it is with sorrow: Under the cold snows of grief the flowers of the Christian graces grow unhurt. We can overcome in sorrow. This does not mean that we should not shed tears. The love of Christ does not harden the heart; it really makes it more sensitive. The grace of Christ does not save us from suffering in bereavement; yet we are to be conquerors. Our sorrow must not crush us: We must go through it victoriously, with sweet submission and joyous confidence. Let us keep in mind that it is “through Him that loved us.

Richard Sibbes
God’s goodness is near us. It is not a goodness far away, but God follows us with His goodness in whatever situation we are. He attaches Himself to us, He has made Himself close, that He might be near us in goodness. He is a father, and everywhere to maintain us. He is a husband, and everywhere to help. He is a friend, and everywhere to comfort and counsel. His love is a near love. He has taken upon Himself the closest kinds of relationships, so that we may never lack God and the evidences of His love.

Martin Luther
This is that mystery which is rich in divine grace to sinners: wherein by a wonderful exchange our sins are no longer ours but Christ’s, and the righteousness of Christ not Christ’s but ours. He has emptied Himself of His righteousness that He might clothe us with it and fill us with it; and He has taken our evils upon Himself that He might deliver us from them. Learn Christ and Him crucified. Learn to pray to Him and, despairing of yourself, say, “Thou, Lord Jesus, art my righteousness, but I am Thy sin. Thou hast taken upon Thyself what is mine and hast given to me what is Thine. Thou hast taken upon Thyself what Thou wast not and hast given to me what I was not.”
Martin Luther
Sur notre faiblesse et notre inaptitude,
Pourrions-nous lever le voile de la chair,
Pourrions-nous, pendant un instant, être les témoins
De ces armées innombrables qui se tiennent
Calmes et brillantes de part et d'autre ;

When the powers of hell prevail
O’er our weakness and unfitness,
Could we lift the fleshly veil,
Could we for a moment witness
Those unnumbered hosts that stand
Calm and bright on either hand;
Oh, what joyful hope would cheer,
Oh, what faith serene would guide us!
Great may be the danger near,
Greater are the friends beside us.

If I love money more than Christ, woe is me!

When God shows us that he is going to use us (and he can do that), we usually tend to think that we are going to see this happen in the next week or two. What often happens is that it is a long time before God gets around to using us as he has in mind. Take Moses. When Moses grew up, he refused to be called the son of Pharaoh’s daughter, “choosing rather to suffer affliction with the people of God, than to enjoy the pleasures of sin for a season” (Hebrews 11:25). Moses thought that when he left the palace and identified himself with his brethren, they would clap their hands and say, “Welcome. We’ve been waiting for you to come.” The truth is they rejected him, and Moses needed another forty years of preparation.
It may be a good while indeed before God’s greater purpose in us will be realized. It could be that you too are in a similar situation. Perhaps you are older and you have yet to see what God’s greater purpose in your own life is. Perhaps you have just about given up. You thought at one time that God was going to use you. You were convinced of it, but it didn’t work out. God’s message to you right now is: the end is not yet. The story isn’t over.

Learning who God really is and what he is truly like-and reminding ourselves of it regularly is the key to it all. Without that we will be double-minded, swept this way one minute and that way the next. We'll just be another wave. With it, you will have a settled character. Wisdom. Patience. Faith.

Watchman Nee
The greatest negative in the universe is the Cross, for with it God wiped out everything that was not of Himself: the greatest positive in the universe is the resurrection, for through it God brought into being all.

John MacArthur
God unleashed the full extent of His fury on Jesus Christ. As Isaiah put it in Isaiah 13:9, “Wrath with fierce anger.” Hell came there. What is hell? Hell is where God punishes people forever. Hell is where God pours out His fury on people forever. God is the power behind the punishment in hell. When you say that hell is being separated from God, only in the sense of His comforting presence, not in the sense of His punishing presence. He is the one who destroys both soul and body in hell. He is the King of hell, Satan is not. And God, who is the punisher of all the souls in eternal hell, shows up in the darkness of Calvary to punish His Son, and He gives His Son eternal hell on behalf of all who would ever believe.
John MacArthur
