John Stott, The Message of the Sermon on the Mount, IVP, 1978, p. 52.

How did Jesus expect His disciples to react under persecution? (In Matthew 5:12 He said), “Rejoice and be glad!” We are not to retaliate like an unbeliever, nor sulk like a child, nor lick our wound in self-pity like a dog, nor just grin a bear it like a Stoic, still less pretend we enjoy it like a masochist. What then? We are to rejoice as a Christian should and even “leap for joy” (Lk. 6:23).

John Stott, The Message of the Sermon on the Mount, IVP, 1978, p. 52.

John Trapp

To an effectual prayer there must concur the intention of the mind and the affections of the heart; else it is not praying but parroting.

GOD IS IN THE SMALL STUFF—AND IT ALL MATTERS, 1998

When you read the Bible, you are reading God’s message for you. The Bible is not just an option for knowing God and the secrets of the universe. It is the only way to discover the details of God’s plan for you. For example, through the Bible you can learn that God created you. You can discover that God loved you so much that He sent Jesus to earth so you could see what God is like in person. And you can find out that Jesus is coming back to earth again in the future. The Bible has all of that and more. So don’t waste another day. Dust off that Bible in your house and open it. As you read, God will begin to speak to you. And what He has to say may very well change your life.

A.W. Tozer

Have you noticed how much praying for revival has been going on of late – and how little revival has resulted? I believe the problem is that we have been trying to substitute praying for obeying, and it simply will not work. To pray for revival while ignoring the plain precept laid down in Scripture is to waste a lot of words and get nothing for our trouble. Prayer will become effective when we stop using it as a substitute for obedience.

Augustin, Confessions.

Give me the grace [O Lord] to do as You command, and command me to do what You will!… O holy God…when Your commands are obeyed, it is from You that we receive the power to obey them.

Augustine, Confessions.

The hidden factor in every encouragement we give, or exhortation, or difficult piece of advice or correction, is that God the Holy Spirit indwells the believer to back it up, and to apply it with a force we do not possess. Our confidence that people will react and respond in the right way is not our confidence in human nature but our confidence regarding God’s working in them.

Jacob

Randy Smith

Jacob is about to enter the Promised Land. He will be one of the venerated Patriarchs of the faith. But before Jacob can become Israel, the man must be broken. Jacob needs to learn that his life is to be one of continual striving with God, but doing it with full dependence on God. He will learn that with God there is a continual heat from the refiner’s fire, but through the adversity there is an unspeakable joy in the journey. And though God probably won’t be wrestling with any of us physically like He did with Jacob, there is a continual tension of finding our greatest peace when we are most intimate in close communion with God. At times we struggle, but in the pain we learn to submit to His will, allow Him to expose our defects, yield to the wounds He creates and then trust Him that the pain is for our greatest good as the “old man” is further put to death. If we act in the flesh and run away or defend ourselves or blame others or whine and complain, we’ll never experience this. As creatures so prone to follow our selfish instincts, there is a serenity that comes when God wrestles us to the ground, breaks us further of our pride and reminds us that our sufficiency is only in Him.

Herman Witsius

The wicked enemy is so inveterately opposed to the Divine majesty that he would gladly, if it were possible, overturn the throne of God. As he utterly despairs of accomplishing that object, he throws out all his venom against the elect, employs every expedient, and exhausts all his devices to enslave those whom the power of God has torn from his grasp. He assaulted the first Adam in Paradise. He made an attempt on the second Adam in the wilderness, but his efforts were foiled. Disappointed in that expectation, he bends all his attack on those whom Christ has claimed to be his own.

Sam Storms

Temptation, in and of itself, is not sin. This is critically important, especially for those who suffer from an overly sensitive and tender conscience. Jesus was repeatedly tempted (Hebrews 2:17-18; 4:15; Mt. 4), but he was sinless. We must resist thinking that we are sub-Christian or sub-spiritual simply because we are frequently tempted. It was the great reformer Martin Luther who first said, “You can’t prevent the birds from flying over your head, but you can keep them from building a nest in your hair.” His point is that a temptation only becomes a sin when you acquiesce to it, as it were “fondle” it and “enjoy” it.

Wayne Mack, To Be or Not To Be a Church Member, Calvary Press, 2004, p. 19.

According to Scripture, the invisible church includes everyone who has ever been genuinely born again for every age of church history. This church will not meet in a visible way until Christ returns. The visible church consists of believers who are alive and meeting together right now.

Wayne Mack, To Be or Not To Be a Church Member, Calvary Press, 2004, p. 19.

It is possible to have a sound theology without having a sound life. But we cannot have a sound life without having a sound theology.

Pratiquer maintenant

A.B. Simpson

Beloved, have you ever thought that someday you will not have anything to try you, or anyone to vex you again? There will be no opportunity in heaven to learn or to show the spirit of patience, forbearance, and longsuffering. If you are to practice these things, it must be now.

A.B. Simpson

Thomas Brooks

Prayer is nothing but the breathing that out before the Lord, that was first breathed into us by the Spirit of the Lord.

A.W. Tozer

The true Christian is uncommon for the reason that he is not in the majority; he is as different from the world in which he lives as Abraham was different from the inhabitants of Canaan. He is likely to be a lowly, humble, approachable man with no claims to greatness or superiority, but his moral standards, his attitudes toward fame, money, earthly pleasures, life and death, mark him as a being from another world.

Jonathan Edwards

We have no strict demonstration of anything, except mathematical truths, but by metaphysics. We can have no proof that is properly demonstrative, of any one position relating to the being and nature of God, his creation of the world, the dependence of all things on him, the nature of bodies and spirits, the nature of our own souls, or any of the great truths of morality and natural religion, but what is metaphysical.

John Hannah, To God be the Glory, Crossway, 2000, p. 16.

God’s chief end in the creation could not have been the creation itself, because the world would then have to have been eternal and equal with God. Since the world is not eternal but an effect caused by the power of God, it could not be the ultimate end of itself. This would lift an effect into the realm of pure cause; a cause that we know is God alone. It would be making a secondary cause into a final cause.

John Hannah, To God be the Glory, Crossway, 2000, p. 16.

Adoniram Judson

If I had not felt certain that every additional trial was ordered by infinite love and mercy, I could not have survived my accumulated sufferings.
