Better and sweeter than health or friends or money or fame or ease or prosperity is the adorable will of our God. It gilds the darkest hours with a divine halo and sheds brightest sunshine on the gloomiest paths. He always reigns who has made it His kingdom, and nothing can go amiss to Him. Surely, then, it is only a glorious privilege that is opening before you when I tell you that the first step you must take in order to enter into the life hid with Christ in God is that of entire consecration. I beg of you not to look at it as a hard and stern demand. You must do it gladly, thankfully, enthusiastically. You must go in on what I call the privilege side of consecration; and I can assure you, from the universal testimony of all who have tried it, that you will find it the happiest place you have ever entered yet.

Fear is one of Satan’s primary schemes for crippling God’s people. I’m not talking about legitimate concern. I’m not talking about the protective warnings of wisdom and godly counsel. I’m talking about fear. Incessant worry. Up-all-night anxiety. Worst-case scenarios becoming the only probabilities you can think about. Fears like these, instead of simply raising our blood pressure, ought to set off some fire alarms. Why am I feeling so paralyzed like this? We clearly know from Scripture that "God has not given us a spirit of fear, but of power and of love and of a sound mind" (2 Tim. 1:7 NKJV). So whenever you sense a "spirit of fear" invading any particular area of your life, you can know by process of elimination that it’s not coming from God.

Hours and minutes are man’s invention. Weeks and days and nights and the month and the year are God’s inventions. A seventh day for rest, God said; and the week was put in the calendar. One day light and one dark; and the day was created. One advent and exit of the silvery moon; and the month was included in its silvery circuit. The planet’s panting journey around the sun; and the year became a terrestrial and celestial fact. Twelve comings and goings of the moon, with a few days excess thrown in for good measure, as is customary with God; and God’s calendar is an accomplished loveliness.

God’s book is written for failures. It is full of folks who were foul-ups and flops but got a second chance. Perfect people? No. Perfect messes? You bet. Yet God used them all. A surprising and welcome discovery of the Bible is this: God uses failures.

If we will watch our lives, we shall find that God meets the things that we commit to Him in prayer with special blessing. He often allows the best things that we have not committed to Him to be ineffectual, simply to remind us of our dependence upon Him for everything. It is very gracious and thoughtful of God to compel us gently to remember Him. He would hold us so close to Himself that we cannot get away for a single minute from His all-sustaining arms.

Il n'y a pas de pire écran pour bloquer l'Esprit que la confiance en notre propre intelligence.
Jean Calvin
There is no worse screen to block out the Spirit than confidence in our own intelligence.

Touchant sa nature humaine, Jésus n'est plus présent avec nous. Touchant sa nature divine, il n'est jamais absent de nous.

Touching His human nature, Jesus is no longer present with us. Touching his Divine nature, He is never absent from us.

Let us aspire to saintliness of spirit and character. I am persuaded that the greatest power we can get over our fellow-men is the power which comes of consecration and holiness.

It is one thing to love sin and to force ourselves to quit it; it is another thing to hate sin because love for God is so gripping that the sin no longer appeals. The latter is repentance; the former is reform. It is repentance that God requires. Repentance is “a change of mind.” To love and yet quit it is not the same as hating it and quitting it. Your supposed victory over a sin may be simple displacement. You may love one sin so much (such as your pride) that you will curtail another more embarrassing sin which you also love. This may look spiritual, but there is nothing of God in it. Natural men do it every day.

Some believe it is only great power that can hold evil at check. But that is not what I have found. I have found that it is the small everyday deeds of ordinary folk that keep the darkness at bay. Small acts of kindness and love.

John MacArthur, Ephésians, Moody, 1986, p. 94.
When [the pastor] loses his sense of servanthood, at that same time he loses his spiritual power and usefulness. When he exalts himself and begins to work in his own human power and according to his own plans, he competes with God and forfeits his spiritual power. To lose dependence is to lose everything, because everything that is of any value in our lives, including power for effective service, comes only from the Lord. Among the greatest dangers to the ministry, and to all faithful Christian living, are things that in the world’s eyes are of supreme value – personal ambition, prestige, recognition, honor, reputation, and success.

Every normal person is born with the idea of God implanted in his mind, though it is suppressed in unrighteousness (Rom. 1:18). As the child grows into adulthood, this idea becomes clearer. Critical experiences in the course of life may make this idea come alive (The Argument that God is an Innate Idea, proponents- Augustine, C. Hodge, Calvin).

Pastor…your toil and labor cannot root in your love for them or their love for you. It must root in your love for Christ, His love for you, and His love for them. He has purchased them with His blood. And you mean to present them to Him. It is for Him that you do it all.

Jesus will say, "Well done, my good and faithful servant," not "well said."

Salvation happens here and now. It is always in the present that God acts to heal and reconcile, entering into the disruption of human lives at great cost to himself, in order to share our predicament and release us from it. This may seem obvious, and if we examine the hymns of popular piety, we can often detect just such an appeal to a present experience of atonement, expressed in phrases like “Jesus saves.” It is ironic, however, that when this devotion has been translated into sermons it has often emerged as more equivalent to “Jesus saved.” For there is a great deal of difference between believing that God “saves” through Christ, and believing that we simply claim the benefits of a salvation that has already happened, a deal that has already been concluded.
