John MacArthur, Matthew 1-7, Moody, 1985, p. 66.
The sorrow of true repentance is…sorrow for offense against a holy God, not simply regret over the personal consequences of our sin. Sorrow over being found out or over suffering hardship or discipline because of our sin is not godly sorrow, and has nothing to do with repentance. That sort of sorrow is but selfish regret, concern for self rather than for God. It merely adds to the original sin.
John MacArthur, Matthew 1-7, Moody, 1985, p. 66.

John MacArthur, Matthieu 1-7, Moody, 1985, p. 475.
A person who is not concerned about having his present sins cleansed has good reason to doubt that his past sin has been forgiven. A person who has no desire to come to the Lord for continued cleansing has reason to doubt that he ever came to the Lord to receive salvation.
John MacArthur, Matthew 1-7, Moody, 1985, p. 475.

We want to be saved from our misery, but not from our sin. We want to sin without misery, just as the prodigal son wanted inheritance without the father. The foremost spiritual law of the physical universe is that this hope can never be realized. Sin always accompanies misery. There is no victimless crime, and all creation is subject to decay because of humanity’s rebellion from God.

What is repentance? According to the Scriptures, three Greek words are transliterated “repentance.” I believe all three put together describe three truths necessary for complete repentance. The Greek word “Metanoeo” speaks of a spiritual change of the mind. Literally it means “to have another mind.” It implies a change of opinion with regard to sin and the recognition of sin against a holy God. We’ll call this the intellectual aspect. The second word, “Metamelomai,” speaks of personal grief or sorrow over sin as it has offended one’s heavenly Father. We’ll call this the emotional aspect. Finally, “Epistrepho,” speaks of a change in direction and transformation of the will. Evidence here is marked by an observable difference in conduct. We’ll call this the volitional aspect.

God is not a God of the edges, with a vested interest in beginnings. God is the God of the whole show.

Fritz, moine allemand, contemporain de Martin Luther.
It is the truth which is assailed in any age which tests our fidelity. It is to confess we are called, not merely to profess. If I profess, with the loudest voice and the clearest exposition, every portion of the truth of God except precisely that little point which the world and the devil are at that moment attacking, I am not confessing Christ, however boldly I may be professing Christianity. Where the battle rages the loyalty of the soldier is proved; and to be steady on all the battle-field besides is mere flight and disgrace to him if he flinches at that one point.

Christ is to us just what His cross is. All that Christ was in heaven or on earth was put into what He did there…you do not understand Christ till you understand His cross.

I do not think I exaggerate when I say that some of us put our offering in the plate with a kind of triumphant bounce as much as to say: “There – now God will feel better!” I am obliged to tell you that God does not need anything you have. He does not need a dime of your money. It is your own spiritual welfare at stake in such matters as these. You have the right to keep what you have all to yourself – but it will rust and decay, and ultimately ruin you.

Every effect has a cause; there cannot be an infinite regress of finite causes; therefore, there must be an uncaused cause or necessary being; this being is God (The Cosmological Argument, proponents- Aquinas). There is observable order or design in the world that cannot be attributed to the object itself; this observable order argues for an intelligent being who established this order; this being is God. Someone once estimated that the number of random genetic factors involved in the evolution of a tapeworm from an amoeba would be comparable to placing a monkey in a room with a typewriter and allowing him to strike the keys at random until he accidentally produced a perfectly spelled and perfectly punctuated typescript of Hamlet's soliloquy.

If rich people only knew when they died--how their relations would scramble for their money, the worms for their bodies, and the devils for their souls--they would not be so anxious to save money!

After the respite, the Christians again came under persecution, this time from Marcus Aurelius, in A.D. 61. One of those who suffered this time was Polycarp, the venerable bishop pf Smyrna… As he entered the stadium with his guards, a voice from heaven was heard to say, “Be strong, Polycarp, and play the man.” No one nearby saw anyone speaking but many people heard the voice. Brought before the tribunal and the crowd, Polycarp refused to deny Christ, although the proconsul begged him to “consider yourself and have pity on your great age. Reproach Christ and I will release you.” Polycarp replied, “Eighty-six years I have served Him, and He never once wronged me. How can I blaspheme my King, who saved me?” Threatened with wild beasts and fire, Polycarp stood his ground.

The church that seeks to give to God and receive from others will suffocate faith and smother love. But if Jesus’ gospel takes root, we will gladly come to God to feast and drink. Then with our hands full and our thirst being quenched, we will most gladly do good to others, especially the church – those who are of the household of faith (2 Cor. 12:15; Gal. 6:10).

The spirit of complaint is born out of an unwillingness to trust God with today. Like the Israelites, it means you are spending your time looking back toward Egypt or wishing for the future all the while missing what God is doing right now.

John Bunyan/William Harding God has prepared a Mercy-seat, a Throne of grace to sit on; that you may come to Him, and that He may hear you and receive you. “I will commune with thee,” saith the Lord, “from above the mercy seat” (Exodus 25:22). “Sinner, when you come to Me, you will find Me upon the mercy-seat. There I bring My pardons; there I hear and receive your petitions, and accept them to My favour.”
God has also prepared a golden altar for you to offer your prayers and tears upon. It is called a “golden” altar to show what worth it is in God’s account: For this golden altar is Jesus Christ; this altar sanctifies your gift, and makes your sacrifice acceptable. This altar, then, makes your groans, golden groans; your tears, golden tears; and your prayers, golden in the eyes of God. (Revelation 8:3; Matthew 23:19; Hebrews 10:10; 1 Peter 2:5).
God has strewn all along the way, from the gate of hell, where you were, to the gate of heaven, where you are going, flowers out of His own garden. Behold how the promises, invitations, calls, and encouragements, like lilies, lie around you! Be careful that you do not tread them under foot, sinner. With promises, did God say? Yes, God has mixed all those promises with His own name and His Son’s name; which is also the name of mercy, goodness, compassion, love, pity, grace, forgiveness, pardon for the coming sinner to be encouraged!…Well, all these things are the good hand of your God upon you, to constrain, to provoke, and to make you willing and able to come, that you might in the end be saved.

What is repentance? 1. Recognition – [Repentance is] an awareness of having defied God by embracing what He despises and despising what He adores. 2. Remorse – Repentance is never a pleasure. It always entails pain. It demands brokenness of heart (Psalms 51:17; Isaiah 57:15). [It is not] out of fear of reprisal, rather than from a hatred of sin. 3. Request – We must ask God for forgiveness and for strength. 4. Repudiation – We must repudiate all sins in question and take active, practical steps to avoid anything that might provoke stumbling. 5. Reformation – There must be an overt determination to pursue purity, to do what pleases God (1 Thessalonicians 1:9).
Sam Storms

The only forgiveness that is worth anything is that which makes it possible for us to forgive ourselves. It is one thing to say, “God forgives.” It is another to forgive ourselves. There are many people walking around who claim to have God forgiving them of all their sins, yet they are not living in the present. They are living in the past. They cannot forgive themselves.
What is God saying to you? Forgive yourself. He’s trying to show you right now how you can do it. Our gracious God comes from behind to shape your past so that, if you will believe Him and give Him time, you will come to see that His hand was with you even at your worst moment. Total forgiveness « shows God’s sovereign plan in everything. If you really do forgive someone, show that you mean it by bringing in God’s total sovereignty. This will convince them. God « can shape your past and take your worst moment and, in time, so redeem your past that you can look back and not wish to change anything. This is the God of the Bible.

God arrived at Calvary – not in light, but in darkness. He showed up to unleash judgment, not in the eschatological sense in the future against the ungodly, but in the soteriological sense against the godly One. What is really going on at Calvary, folks – and this is where you go deeper with the understanding of it – it’s beyond the physical suffering, it’s beyond the sacrifice of Christ. What’s happening here is divine wrath is being poured out in its final form. Eternal wrath is about to be released and the darkness is everywhere. You could say it another way. God brought hell to Jerusalem that day.
John MacArthur
