Jerry Bridges, Trusting God, 1988, p. 177.
Every adversity that comes across our path, whether large or small, is intended to help us grow in some way. If it were not beneficial, God would not allow it or send it, “For he does not willingly bring affliction or grief to the children of men” (Lamentations 3:33). God does not delight in our sufferings. He brings only that which is necessary, but He does not shrink from that which will help us grow.
Jerry Bridges, Trusting God, 1988, p. 177.

Les simples nécessités de la vie
John Piper, Desiring God, 1996, p. 162-163.
Christians can be and ought to be content with the simple necessities of life… First, when you have God near you and for you, you don’t need extra money or extra things to give you peace and security… God is always better than gold… Second, we can be content with the simplicity because the deepest, most satisfying delights God gives us through creation are free gifts from nature and from loving relationships with people. After your basic needs are met, accumulated money begins to diminish your capacity for these pleasures rather than increase them. Buying things contributes absolutely nothing to the heart’s capacity for joy… Third, we should be content with the simple necessities of life because we could invest the extra we make for what really counts (God’s kingdom).
John Piper, Desiring God, 1996, p. 162-163.

Le sermon
John Owen
A sermon is not made with an eye upon the sermon, but with both eyes upon the people and all the heart upon God.

La patience et la longanimité
R.C. Sproul
Longsuffering, forbearing patience is to be the Christian’s reflection of the character of God. It is part of God’s character to be slow to anger and quick to be merciful. Part of the incomprehensibility of God in terms of my own relationship with Him is this: I cannot fathom how a holy God has been able to put up with me marring His creation to the degree I have for three score and five years. For me to live another day requires a continuation of God’s gracious patience with my sin… It becomes even more difficult to fathom when we see a sinless Being being more patient with sinful beings that sinful beings are with each other.

Dieu nous voit en secret
Thomas Brooks
God sees us in secret; therefore, let us seek His face in secret. Though heaven be God’s palace, yet it is not his prison.

La réception d'un don spirituel
George Gardiner, The Corinthian Catastrophe, 1974, publié par Kregel Publications, Grand Rapids, MI. p. 33.
The reception of a spiritual gift is not the result of prayer, fasting, tears or sacrifice on the part of the recipient, but is a gift of grace, for the good of the body of Christ and is received at conversion when we are baptized into that body by the Holy Spirit.
George Gardiner, The Corinthian Catastrophe, 1974, Published by Kregel Publications, Grand Rapids, MI. p. 33.

Ayons du cœur à l'ouvrage ; soyons authentiques.
George Muller
Our holy faith does not consist in talking. ”Reality, reality, reality," is what we want. Let us have heart-work; let us be genuine. Brethren! we should live so as to be missed - missed both in the Church and in the world, when we are removed. Oh how rapidly is time hastening on! We should live in such a manner as that, if we were called hence, our dear brethren and sisters might feel our loss, and from their inmost souls exclaim, "Oh that such a one were in our midst again! " We ought to be missed even by the world. Worldly persons should be constrained to say of us, "If ever there was a Christian upon earth, that man was one."

L'obtention des richesses
Matthew Henry
There is a burden of care in getting riches; fear of keeping them; temptation in using them; guilt of abusing them; sorrow in losing them; and a burden of account at last to be given concerning them.
Matthew Henry

Christ prie pour nous
George Whitefield
Since then Christ is praying for us, whom should we fear? And since He has promised to make us more than conquerors, of whom should we be afraid? No, though an host of demons are lined up against us, let us not be afraid; though the hottest persecution should rise up against us, yet let us put our trust in God. Even though Satan, and the rest of his apostate spirits, are powerful, when compared with us; yet, if put in competition with the Almighty, they are as weak as the smallest worms. God has them all reserved in chains of darkness until the final judgment day. They shall only go as far as He permits them, and no farther.

Devenir un réflexe naturel
Randy Smith
Prayer becomes a natural reflex like breathing. We don’t need to search for prayer content. We just need to love the Lord by learning His word and love others in the church in an intimate way. In following the two greatest commandments, we’ll have the knowledge we need to pray appropriately. In our love for the Lord we will naturally have a desire to speak continually with Him and in our love for others we know the best thing we can do for them is pray. You see, prayer is birthed not from duty, but from relationship – first love to God and then love to others.

Les lois morales de Dieu
Jerry Bridges, Transforming Grace, NavPress, 1991, p. 30.
[Sin] says to an absolutely holy and righteous God that His moral laws, which are a reflection of His own nature, are not worthy of our wholehearted obedience.

Lorsqu'un homme parle à Dieu, il est à son apogée
Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Studies in the Sermon on the Mount, Eerdmans, 1971, v. 2, p. 46.
When a man is speaking to God he is at his very acme. It is the highest activity of the human soul, and therefore it is at the same time the ultimate test of a man’s true spiritual condition. There is nothing that tells the truth about us as Christian people so much as our prayer life. Everything we do in the Christian life is easier than prayer.
Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Studies in the Sermon on the Mount, Eerdmans, 1971, v. 2, p. 46.

Dieu vous a donné un don spirituel
Donald S. Whitney, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, 1991, p. 124.
God has given you a spiritual gift, and it is not the same as a natural ability. That natural talent, rightly sanctified for God’s use, often points toward the identity of your spiritual gift. But you should find out the special gift God has given you while you’re serving as diligently as you can without that definite information. In fact, in addition to the study of Scripture, the best way to discover and confirm which spiritual gift is yours is through serving.
Donald S. Whitney, Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, 1991, p. 124.
