Upon the two hinges of faith and repentance do all the promises of the Bible stand.

Poverty and affliction take away the fuel that feeds pride.

Robert Andrews Millikan
The impossibility of real science and real religion ever conflicting becomes evident when one examines the purpose of science and the purpose of religion. The purpose of science is to develop – without prejudice or preconception of any kind – a knowledge of the facts, the laws and the processes of nature. The even more important task of religion, on the other hand, is to develop the consciences, the ideals and the aspirations of mankind.

Charles Haddon Spurgeon
If God declares that all is well, ten thousand devils may declare it to be ill, but we laugh them all to scorn. Blessed be God for a faith which enables us to believe God when the creatures contradict Him.

Alwyn York, The Holy Spirits Illumination of Scripture.
The Holy Spirit enlightens a person, not by giving an added content of knowledge, but by mysteriously operating on his heart so that he can see the revelation already given. The image used in Scripture is of removing a veil (2 Corinthians 3:15-16)… The truth was there before them all the time, only they were prevented from seeing it.
Alwyn York, The Holy Spirits Illumination of Scripture.

In a sovereign promise, God makes the promise and initiates the process of fulfillment; all we must do is believe and stay in alignment with our assignment. With a conditional promise, the receiver is the initiator of the process. The process will not begin until you start fulfilling your responsibilities to the condition. Your follow-through becomes the key to your breakthrough. In this way, you are currently moving at the rate of your own obedience. Your divine acceleration is determined by how long it takes you to obey.

According to the Proverbs, wisdom begins with fearing God, increases with the fear of God and is proven by fearing God. Through prayer, are you asking the Lord to reveal sin in your heart? Is God showing you sin as you study the Bible? Are you grieved over your sin? Are you more grieved over your sin than angered over the sins of others around you? Do you hate your sin? Do you hate your sin not primarily because of the consequences, but because you love God? Are you confessing your sin? Are you turning from your sin with the sufficient grace God provides?

A.W. Tozer
We talk of Him much and loudly, but we secretly think of Him as being absent, and we think of ourselves as inhabiting a parenthetic interval between the God who was and the God who will be. And we are lonely with an ancient and cosmic loneliness. We are each like a little child lost in a crowded market, who has strayed but a few feet from its mother, yet because she cannot be seen, the child is inconsolable. So we try by every method devised by religion to relieve our fears and heal our hidden sadness; but with all our efforts we remain unhappy still, with the settled despair of men alone in a vast and deserted universe.
A.W. Tozer

Phillips Brooks
Bad will be the day, for every man when he becomes absolutely contented with the life that he is living, with the thoughts that he is thinking, with the deeds that he is doing, when there is not forever beating at the doors of his soul some great desire to do something larger, which he knows that he was meant and made to do because he is still, in spite of all, the child of God

John MacArthur
Even the good deeds unbelievers perform are not truly a fulfillment of God’s law, because they are produced by the flesh, for selfish reasons, and from a heart that is in rebellion.
John MacArthur

Peace does not promise the problem goes away. It means God is present, and enough, even when the problem doesn't go away.

There can be no wisdom apart from a relationship with Christ. Remember how the Queen of Sheba came from far away to hear the wisdom of Solomon. However Jesus said of Himself in Matthew 12, “The Queen of the South shall rise up with this generation at the judgment and shall condemn it, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and behold, something greater than Solomon is here” (Matthew 12:42). Others spoke of God’s wisdom; Jesus is the wisdom of God (1 Corinthians 1:24; 30)! Others spoke of truth; Jesus is the truth (John 14:6)! Others proclaimed God’s forgiveness; Jesus brought God’s forgiveness by His death (Colossians 1:22). Is it any wonder why Paul could say in Colossians 2:3, “In [Christ] are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge.” Randy Smith

Why is salvation all of God’s grace and not based in any part on our own works? 1. Because you and I have sin that God will never accept in His holy presence. 2. Because the standard of righteousness required is God Himself. 3. Because, Ephesians 2:9, God does not want us to boast, but rather saves us, “So that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus” (Ephesians 2:7). 4. Because a love relationship is never based on the works one gives another. 5. Because we will forever wonder if we did enough good deeds. 6. And because if we could save ourselves based on our works, there would have been no reason to send Jesus Christ.
