La patience de Dieu

Le Seigneur attend si longtemps dans sa bonté que les gens pensent qu'il ne peut pas juger, mais quand il vient en jugement, il est si décisif qu'il semble qu'il ne puisse pas faire preuve de miséricorde. Car il ne s'agit pas de la colère soudaine d'un tempérament irritable, facilement enflammé mais tout aussi facilement apaisé. Il s'agit d'une colère délibérée, mesurée, qui suit une enquête complète sur les faits. Il ne peut y avoir d'appel ou de sursis de dernière minute, car il n'y a pas de tribunal supérieur auquel on puisse faire appel, et aucun fait pertinent n'a été négligé pour rendre le verdict. Il en fut ainsi pour Sodome et Gomorrhe, et il en sera de même à la fin de l'histoire [voir Luc 17:28-30].

The Lord waits so long in His graciousness that people think He cannot judge, but when He does come in judgment, it is so decisive that it seems as if He cannot show mercy. For this is not the sudden anger of an irritable temper, easily inflamed but equally easily pacified. This is deliberate, measure wrath, following a full investigation of the facts. There can be no last-minute appeals or reprieves, for there is no higher court to whom appeal can be made, and no pertinent facts have been overlooked in reaching the verdict. So it was with Sodom and Gomorrah, and so it shall be at the end of history [see Luke 17:28-30].
