Dans nos églises
Dwight L. Moody
We have in our churches a great deal of prayer, but I think it would be a good thing if we had a praise meeting occasionally. If we could only get people to praise God for what He has done, it would be a good deal better than asking Him continually for something.
Dwight L. Moody

La science de ce monde
FIODOR DOSTOÏEVSKI (1821-1881) ROMANCIER RUSSE
LES FRÈRES KARAMAZOV, 1879
The science of this world, which has become a great power, has, especially in the last century, analyzed everything divine handed down to us in the old books. After this cruel analysis the learned of the world have nothing left of all that was sacred of old. But they have only analyzed the parts and overlooked the whole, and indeed their blindness is marvelous. Yet the whole still stands steadfastly before their eyes, and the gates of hell shall not prevail against it. Has it not lasted nineteen centuries, is it not still a living, a moving power in the individual soul and in the masses of people? It is still as strong and living even in the souls of atheists, who have destroyed everything! For even those who have renounced Christianity and attack it, in their inmost being still follow the Christian ideal, for hitherto neither their subtlety nor the ardor of their hearts has been able to create a higher ideal of man and of virtue than the ideal given by Christ of old.
FYODOR DOSTOEVSKY (1821–1881) RUSSIAN NOVELIST
THE BROTHERS KARAMAZOV, 1879

Quand Dieu veut sonder un homme
Quand Dieu veut sonder un homme
Et faire vibrer un homme
Et former un homme,
Quand Dieu veut façonner un homme
Pour jouer le rôle le plus noble ;
Dieu seul comprend ;
Alors que son cœur torturé pleure
Et qu'il lève des mains suppliantes !
Comme Il plie mais ne rompt jamais
Quand il entreprend son bien ;
Comment Il utilise qui Il veut,
Et dont chaque but le fusionne ;
Par chaque acte l'incite
A essayer sa splendeur -
Dieu sait ce qu'il fait.

When God wants to drill a man
And thrill a man
And skill a man,
When God wants to mold a man
To play the noblest part;
When He yearns with all His heart
To create so great and bold a man
That all the world shall be amazed,
Watch His methods, watch His ways!
How He ruthlessly perfects
Whom He royally elects!
How He hammers him and hurts him,
And with mighty blows converts him.
Into trial shapes of clay which
Only God understands;
While his tortured heart is crying
And he lifts beseeching hands!
How He bends but never breaks
When his good He undertakes;
How He uses whom He chooses,
And which every purpose fuses him;
By every act induces him
To try His splendor out –
God knows what He’s about.

Un grand acte d'amour
Je suis convaincu que le plus grand acte d'amour que nous puissions accomplir pour les gens est de leur parler de l'amour de Dieu pour eux dans le Christ.
Billy Graham
I am convinced the greatest act of love we can ever perform for people is to tell them about God’s love for them in Christ.

Les pasteurs ont-ils besoin de prier ?
Walter Chantry, The Shadow of the Cross - Studies in Self-Denial, 1981, p. 67.
[Do pastors need to pray?] The glorious Sovereign conducts the affairs of His everlasting kingdom in the neighbourhood of the gates of hell, recruiting each new member of His body from Satan’s precinct. It is then inevitable that every preacher contends for truth and righteousness against principalities and powers of darkness.
Walter Chantry, The Shadow of the Cross – Studies in Self-Denial, 1981, p. 67.

Ce que le Saint-Esprit apporte
Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Preaching and Preachers, Zondervan, 1972, p. 324.
[The Holy Spirit brings] clarity of thought, clarity of speech, ease of utterance, a great sense of authority and confidence as you are preaching, an awareness of a power not your own thrilling through the whole of your being, and an indescribable sense of joy. You are a man “possessed,” you are taken hold of, and taken up. I like to put it like this – and I know of nothing on earth that is comparable to this feeling – that when this happens you have a feeling that you are not actually doing the preaching, you are looking on. You are looking on at yourself in amazement as this is happening. It is not your effort; you are just the instrument, the channel, the vehicle: and the Spirit is using you, and you are looking on in great enjoyment and astonishment. There is nothing that is in any way comparable to this.
Martyn Lloyd-Jones, Preaching and Preachers, Zondervan, 1972, p. 324.

Je suis à lui par achat et par conquête
Thomas Brooks
I am His by purchase and I am His by conquest; I am His by donation and I am His by election; I am His by covenant and I am His by marriage; I am wholly His; I am peculiarly His; I am universally His; I am eternally His. Once I was a slave but now I am a son; once I was dead but now I am alive; once I was darkness but now I am light in the Lord; once I was a child of wrath, an heir of hell, but now I am an heir of heaven; once I was Satan’s bond-servant but now I am God’s freeman; once I was under the spirit of bondage but now I am under the Spirit of adoption that seals up to me the remission of my sins, the justification of my person and the salvation of my soul.

Notre besoin futur

John Piper, Desiring God, p. 210, 1996.
I do not appeal to you to screw up your courage and sacrifice for Christ. I appeal to you to renounce all you have to obtain life that satisfies your deepest longings. I appeal to you to count all things as rubbish for the surpassing value of standing in the service of the King of kings. I appeal to you to take off your store-bought rags and put on the garments of God’s ambassadors. I promise you persecutions and privations, but “remember the joy!” “Blessed are those who are persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the kingdom of heaven” (Mt. 5:10).
John Piper, Desiring God, p. 210, 1996.

Y a-t-il une voix dans les pleurs ?
Charles H. Spurgeon
Is there a voice in weeping? Does weeping speak? In what language doth it utter its meaning? Why, in that universal tongue which is known and understood in all the earth, and even in heaven above. When a man weeps, whether he be a Jew or Gentile, Barbarian, Scythian, bond or free, it has the same meaning in it. Weeping is the eloquence of sorrow. It is an unstammering orator, needing no interpreter, but understood of all. Is it not sweet to believe that our tears are understood even when words fail? Let us learn to think of tears as liquid prayers, and of weeping as a constant dropping of importunate intercession which will wear its way right surely into the very heart of mercy, despite the stony difficulties which obstruct the way. My God, I will “weep” when I cannot plead, for thou hearest the voice of my weeping.
Charles H. Spurgeon

C'est une atteinte à sa sainteté
Robert Peterson, Hell on Trial : The Case for Eternal Punishment, Publishers, 1995, p. 220.
Sin is best defined in relation to God’s perfect character; at root it is an attack against His holiness. It must therefore be punished. Although three kinds of punishment are spoken of in Scripture – preventative, remedial, and retributive – only the first and last pertain to hell. Warnings of hell are preventative for all who heed them, but those who reject God’s warnings will endure His retributive punishment forever.
Robert Peterson, Hell on Trial: The Case for Eternal Punishment, Publishers, 1995, p. 220.

La Bible est très claire
Oswald Sanders, Spiritual Leadership, Moody Publishers, 1967, p. 91-92.
The Bible is very clear on the reasons why prayers go unanswered, and every reason centers on the believer’s relationship with God. God will not cooperate with prayers of mere self-interest, or prayers that come from impure motives. The Christian who clings to sin closes the ear of God. Least of all will God tolerate unbelief, the chief of sins.
Oswald Sanders, Spiritual Leadership, Moody Publishers, 1967, p. 91-92.

Il nous permet de venir à Lui
Auteur inconnu, The Kneeling Christian, circa 1930, ch. 6.
He bids us come to Him whenever we like for all we need. His resources are infinite. But He bids us to remember that we should ask only for those things that are according to His will – only for that which will bring glory to His name.

La croissance spirituelle
Sinclair Ferguson, Grow in Grace,1989, p. 95.
Spiritual growth depends on two things: first a willingness to live according to the Word of God; second, a willingness to take whatever consequences emerge as a result.

Une grande bénédiction à son Église,
Jonathan Edwards
When God is about to bestow some great blessing on His church, it is often His manner, in the first place, so to order things in His providence as to show His church their great need of it, and to bring them into distress for want of it, and so put them upon crying earnestly to Him for it.

La marche de la foi
Phillips Brooks
I hear men praying everywhere for more faith, but when I listen to them carefully, and get to the real heart of their prayer, very often it is not more faith at all that they are wanting, but a change from faith to sight. Faith says not, “I see that it is good for me, so God must have sent it,” but, “God sent it, and so it must be good for me.” Faith, walking in the dark with God, only prays Him to clasp its hand more closely.

Rêver du paradis ?
John MacArthur, The Glory of Heaven, 1996, page 51.
We don’t seek to escape this life by dreaming of heaven. But we do find we can endure this life because of the certainty of heaven. Heaven is eternal. Earth is temporal. Those who fix all their affections of the fleeting things of this world are the real escapists, because they are vainly attempting to avoid facing eternity – by hiding in the fleeting shadows of things that are only transient.
John MacArthur, The Glory of Heaven, 1996, page 51.

Courir après l'argent

Combattre une dépendance
Dawna De Silva
Fighting an addiction with your own strength is like picking the rotten fruit off a bad tree. Picking the bad fruit may get rid of the odor, but it will not kill the tree itself. You must uproot the tree to kill the bad fruit. To truly break an addiction, you must uproot both the belief systems that are planted in your heart and the resulting sinful habits that first seeded the addiction.
Dawna De Silva
