L'émotion qui résulte d'une tragédie
Steve Swartz, Strength in the River, 2016, Kress Biblical Resources, p. 49.
Emotion as a result of tragedy is not sin; rejecting God’s sovereignty and responding in anger or impatience is sin. Yes, we accept God’s plan in humble submission, but this doesn’t mean we don’t go before Him to weep and wail.
Steve Swartz, Strength in the River, 2016, Kress Biblical Resources, p. 49.

Construire notre sainteté
J.C. Ryle, Holiness, Moody Publishers, 2010, p. 43.
We must begin low, if we would build high, I am convinced that the first step towards attaining a higher standard of holiness is to realize more fully the amazing sinfulness of sin.

Nous devons être chrétiens avant de mourir
J.C. Ryle, Holiness, Moody Publishers, copyright 2010, p. 59.
We must be saints before we die, if we are to be saints afterwards in glory. The favorite idea of many, that dying men need nothing except absolution and forgiveness of sins to fit them for their great change, is a profound delusion. We need the work of the Holy Spirit as well as the work of Christ; we need renewal of the heart as well as the atoning blood; we need to be sanctified as well as to be justified.

Trouver la sagesse et le réconfort
Steve Swartz, Strength in the River, 2016, Kress Biblical Resources, p. 132.
Wisdom and comfort are found in knowing and trusting God as He has revealed Himself – even when you can’t understand the reason for your suffering.

Tim Keller, Hope in Times of Fear : The Resurrection and the Meaning of Easter, Viking, 2021, p.24.
The resurrection was indeed a miraculous display of God’s power, but we should not see it as a suspension of the natural order of the world. Rather it was the beginning of the restoration of the natural order of the world, the world as God intended it to be. . . . The resurrection means not merely that Christians have a hope for the future but that they have a hope that comes from the future. The Bible’s startling message is that when Jesus rose, he brought the future kingdom of God into the present.

Rendre l'évangile plus acceptable ?
Greg Gilbert, Don't Call it a Comeback, édité par Kevin DeYoung, 2011, page 73.
Surely Paul could have made the gospel more palatable – and less dangerous – by saying it was about something else. Something cleaner and less ridiculous than the cross. Something more glorious. Less disgusting. He didn’t do that, though. “I decided,” Paul said, “to know nothing among you except Jesus Christ and Him crucified” (1 Cor. 2:2). In the face of the worst cultural prejudice imaginable, he fixed the entire gospel squarely and immovably on the fact that Jesus was tacked to a stauros and left to die. If he had been trying to find a surefire way to turn first-century people off from his “good news,” he couldn’t have done better than that! So why did he do it? It’s simple. He did it because he knew that leaving the cross out, or running past it with a glance, or making it peripheral to the gospel, or allowing anything else to displace it at the center of the gospel would make it, finally, no gospel at all.
Greg Gilbert, Don’t Call it a Comeback, edited by Kevin DeYoung, 2011, page 73.

Vivre la théologie
Paul David Tripp, Dangerous Calling, 2012, p. 54.
For [those] who have not been required to confess that it is easier to learn theology then live it, it is tempting to think maturity is more a matter of knowing than a matter of living. They think that godliness is more a matter of what you intellectually grasp than a matter of how you live your life.

Une alliance différente
Michael Lawrence, Biblical Theology, 2010, Crossway Books, page 81.
In Jeremiah’s prophecy of the new covenant, Jeremiah explicitly says, “It will not be like the covenant I made with their forefathers, when I led them by the hand out of Egypt” (Jer. 31:32). How will it be different? For one thing, it will be unbreakable (v. 32). For another, all the members of that covenant will be regenerate, the law written on their hearts (v. 33). Yet another difference will be that the covenant will not operate according to natural lines of birth and descent, but through spiritual birth (vv. 29-30). Here the discontinuity between the new covenant and the Mosaic covenant is enormous: a covenant of grace, not works; a covenant that regenerates rather than kills; a covenant entered into through spiritual rather than natural birth. And yet for all this discontinuity, Jeremiah is clear that this new covenant is the ultimate fulfillment of God’s promises to Israel, made to their forefather Abraham.

La souffrance dans cette vie
Michael Lawrence, Théologie biblique, 2010, Crossway Books, page 150.
Suffering in this life is at least partly a warning to us, a foretaste of the eternal suffering we deserve outside of Christ.

Le temps de formation
David Mathis, Don't Call it a Comeback, édité par Kevin DeYoung, 2011, p. 229.
Jesus spent over three years with His twelve disciples. He called them to be discipled at the outset of His ministry (Matthew 4:19), and He gave them the lion’s share of His life until His departure in Matthew 28. He invested His life in His men. It is amazing to track in the Gospels how much Jesus gave of Himself to His disciples. The crowds pursued Him, but He pursued His disciples. He was willing to bless the masses, but He invested in the few.

En chasse
J.C. Ryle, Holiness, Moody Publishers, 2010, p. 113-114.
[The devil] is always “going about as a lion seeking whom he may devour.” An unseen enemy, he is always near us, about our path and about our bed, and spying out all our ways. A “murderer and a liar” from the beginning, he labors night and day to cast us down to hell. Sometimes by leading into superstition, sometimes by suggesting infidelity, sometimes by one kind of tactics and sometimes by another, he is always carrying on a campaign against our souls… The strong man armed will never be kept out of our hearts without a daily battle.

La perfection
Paul David Tripp, Dangerous Calling, 2012, p. 207.
Pastor, you will never be that perfect portrait; the only one who achieved that perfection was Christ. No, rather than being a perfect portrait that assures people that the gospel is true, you and I are called to be windows through which people look and see the glory of the risen Lord Jesus Christ. It is our weakness that demonstrates both the essentiality and power of the grace of the Lord Jesus Christ.

Vivre pleinement la vie
Sam Storms, One Thing, Christian Focus, 2004, p.182-183.
You need never live in fear that any heavenly joy will ever be lost or taken away! We struggle to enjoy life now from fear that it will soon end. We hesitate to savor what little happiness we have for fear that it may be taken away. We hold back and hedge our bets and restrain our souls, knowing that disaster may soon come, economic recession may begin, physical health may deteriorate, someone may die, or something unforeseen may surprise us and take it all away. But not in heaven! Never! The beauty and joy and glory and delight and satisfaction and purity will never ever end, but only increase and grow and expand and multiply!

Notre souffrance
Paul David Tripp, Dangerous Calling, 2012, p. 221.
We must remember that our suffering is not in the way of God’s plan, but part of it. In our suffering, God is not only with us but also is employing it to change us and those to whom we minister.

Les réponses aux problèmes pratiques
Jonathan Leeman, Don't Call it a Comeback, édité par Kevin DeYoung, 2011, page 101.
Practical problems have theological answers. So the question is not whether or not you’re going to be a theologian, but what kind of theologian you’re going to be.

Paul David Tripp, Dangerous Calling, 2012, Crossway Books, p. 49.

L'urgence de la prière
Robert Murray McCheyne, Comfort in Sorrow, Christian Focus, 2002, p. 19.
Learn that urgency in prayer does not so much consist in vehement pleading, as in vehement believing. He that believes most the love and power of Jesus will obtain the most in prayer.

Un humble premier pas
Karl Graustein, Growing Up Christian, 2005, p. 187.
Prayer is the humble first step in the battle against our indwelling sin. It says, “I am taking sin seriously, I cannot do this on my own, and I need the help of God.” When we pray for greater conviction of sin, God will give it to us, and we will be motivated to wage war against it.

Le rassemblement de l'église
J.D. Greear, Gaining by Losing, Zondervan, 2015, p. 106.
We should not allow people to see the church as a weekly service they attend to make God happy. The gathering of the church is preparation for heavenly battle. We “huddle together” for a few minutes each week to worship God together and build each other up so that each of us can more effectively run the “missional play” throughout the week.

Ce que nous croyons de Dieu
Jonathan Leeman, Don't Call it a Comeback, édité par Kevin DeYoung, 2011, p. 57.
It’s essential, moreover, to get the doctrine of God right before moving on. Either God will be the center of one’s doctrinal solar system or something else will. What we believe about God determines what we believe about everything.

Notre expérience de Dieu
Sam Storms, One Thing, Christian Focus, 2004, p.172-173.
Our experience of God will never reach its consummation. We will never finally arrive, as if upon reaching a peak we discover there is nothing beyond. Our experience of God will never become stale. It will deepen and develop, intensify and amplify, unfold and increase, broaden and balloon. Our relishing and rejoicing in God will sharpen and spread and extend and progress and mature and flower and blossom and widen and stretch and swell and snowball and inflate and lengthen and augment and advance and proliferate and accumulate and accelerate and multiply and heighten and reach a crescendo that will even then be only the beginning of an eternity of new and fresh insights into the majesty of who God is!

La conscience n'est pas infaillible
Kevin DeYoung, The Hole in Our Holiness, 2012, p. 41-42.
The conscience is not infallible. We can have an evil conscience that doesn’t turn away from sin (Heb. 10:22). We can have a seared conscience that no longer feels bad for evil (1 Tim. 4:2). We can have a weak conscience that feels bad for things that aren’t really bad (1 Cor. 8:7-12). And we can have a defiled conscience that loses its ability to discern right from wrong (Titus 1:15).

Une relation d'amour sainte et bénie
Alexander Strauch, Leading With Love, Lewis and Roth, 2006, p.30-31.
We should, of course, seek to continually improve our skills in leadership, personal discipline, time management, interpersonal relationships, and teaching. But above all these things, we should seek to increase our knowledge and enjoyment of Christ and deepen our love for Him (Phil. 3:8-14). After all, the deeper our love for Him the more we will become like Him in love and the more we will be able to teach others to love. There is, therefore, hardly anything better we can do for those we lead than to love the Lord Jesus Christ supremely and keep our love relationship with Him fresh and growing every day! Out of this blessed and holy love relationship will come a greater manifestation of God’s love in us, shining out to others and drawing them to Christ.
Alexander Strauch, Leading With Love, Lewis and Roth, 2006, p.30-31.

Pourquoi peut-on faire confiance dans la Bible ? (2)

J.C. Ryle, Holiness, Moody Publishers, 2010, p. 86.
A holy man will…endeavor to set his affections entirely on things above, and to hold things on earth with a very loose hand. He will not neglect the business of the life that now is; but the first place in his mind and thoughts will be given to the life to come. He will aim to live like one whose treasure is in heaven, and to pass through this world like a stranger and pilgrim traveling to his home.

Nous devons nous attendre à souffrir injustement.
John MacArthur, The Book on Leadership, 2004, p. 130.
Being misrepresented, slandered, reviled, persecuted, and wrongfully accused is an inevitable part of being a Christian. We must expect to suffer unjustly. Our lives confront the culture we live in. We live as aliens in the world, and it should not surprise us when the world is hostile toward us (1 John 3:13). We were called for that purpose. In this world we will have tribulation (John 16:33). It goes with the territory.

Un don de Dieu
Michael Lawrence, Théologie biblique, 2010, Crossway Books, page 163.
It’s not that faith itself is saving. It’s that faith is the way you acknowledge Christ as your substitute… Faith leans on Christ and trusts that when Christ died on the cross, He was dying in your place, for you.
Michael Lawrence, Biblical Theology, 2010, Crossway Books, page 163.
