La défaite de la raison

Robert Jastrow, directeur de l’observatoire de ‘Mount Wilson’ a dit : “Il s'agit d'un développement extrêmement étrange, inattendu par tous, sauf par les théologiens. Ils ont toujours accepté la parole de la Bible : Au commencement, Dieu créa le ciel et la terre... Pour le scientifique qui a vécu avec une foi intangible dans la puissance de la raison, l’histoire se termine comme un mauvais rêve. Il a gravi les montagnes de l’ignorance; il est sur le point de conquérir le sommet le plus élevé et tandis qu’il se hisse sur le dernier plateau, il est accueilli par une bande de théologiens qui s’y trouvaient depuis des siècles.”

“This is an exceedingly strange development, unexpected by all but the theologians. They have always accepted the word of the Bible: In the beginning God created heaven and earth… [But] for the scientist who has lived by his faith in the power of reason, the story ends like a bad dream. He has scaled the mountains of ignorance; he is about to conquer the highest peak; [and] as he pulls himself over the final rock, he is greeted by a band of theologians who have been sitting there for centuries.”
